Any reason NOT to buy a 1988 model?

Post by GD2 »

I am casually looking at GL1500s and would normally avoid the first year of a new model, and I have also read that the 1988s have complicated vacuum system.

What reasons (if any) would make you avoid buying a 1988?

Or are there reasons you DO like them?

Both 88 and 89 are odd ducks. There are a ton of changes between 89 and 90. So, finding parts and info for those first years is a little harder. They are still great bikes, but just know what you are getting into before purchase. Be sure to get the proper year service manual.

I think that the 88-89s had the complete rear end/swing arm/rear wheel off of the four cylinder 1200s that preceded them. The 1500 didn't get it's own rear end 'til 1990.

I've an 89 with 120,000 miles on it. Been riding it 3seasons now and happy with it.
Expect to wrench on it it's over 30 years old but I've accessed any parts I've needed.

If I hadn't found a great deal on a beautiful '99, I would still be riding my '89.

And smiling.
