1995 GL1500A Aspencade radio display

Post by strefethren »

Hello all,

I am new to this forum and I am looking for some advise. I Have a 1995 GL1500A Aspencade. It is what I would call a base model. It does not have reverse, digital display for radio etc. etc. I bought a used instrument cluster with the digital radio display as mine does not have this. I am not sure if this is possible to do. It seems as though I am lacking part of the wiring harness from the instrument cluster to the radio controls? Does anyone have any information or help on this. I really struggle trying to find what station I am on without a display. Please help. Thank you.

I do not have any direct information regarding the Interstate model wing which is what you have. But I seriously doubt that the wiring necessary to make your replacement dash with a digital display work on your bike is already there. I think you will just have to live with what you have but maybe I am wrong.

MikeB thank you for your reply. I am not sure either. I guess I will just have to keep digging.

The actual radio is different on the Interstate. Do you have the one in the center or the one on the left side? The dash LCD controls a bunch of functions so it's not a viable option to add that, even if you do swap the radio. You can use devices that allow you to connect your phone for music. You can also go with an aftermarket radio. There is a blank filler panel that gives you a nice mounting location. Some of the marine radios are really small. Or if those bells and whistles are important to you, replace the bike with an Aspencade or SE model.

If you have the model with no reverse, no cruise control, and no digital dash, you have a Interstate model. Also the radio has only four knobs and no cassette. The display for this model is only for radio and clock and is in the face of the radio. You cannot install an instrument panel from an Aspencade or SE and have it work. There are too many differences between these bikes. You also have non self cancel turn signals and non adjustable windshield.
Those who say it cannot be done should try not to interrupt those who are doing it.

The only thing you have right in this is that I have no reverse. I have 5 knows on the radio with cassette, I also have adjustable windshield. The radio has an additional connection space which to me looks like a harness would go from that to the instrument cluster.

It sounds to me like one of the previous owners added the adjusters for the windshield and replaced the original radio. The additional connection space would be for a CB radio harness connection.

I notice in your profile that you have listed a 1995 goldwing aspencade. If it is truly an Aspencade, it would have reverse. No reverse? That would make it an Intersatate.

Strethefren: I have no doubt your bike is 'equipped' as you describe. However, I concur with MikeB that your model left the factory as an Interstate. Every GL1500 Aspencade ever made came with reverse. Some of the Aspencade features can be retrofitted, though. Some would obviously be more difficult than others.

A couple other questions: Does the right side handlebar switch controls have buttons for reverse? That is, ON, SET, up/down etc? Does the bike have controls on the lower right fairing panel for controlling the rear suspension? If so, then the bike may indeed be na Aspencade and a previous owner removed the reverse lever for some reason. ?

Ron, you may be confusing your Gold Wing Models. There are no controls for reverse on the handlebars. There is only the reverse lever, low on the left side near where your knee would be.

Mike, I have to believe Ron meant to say cruise control buttons not reverse.

You are probably correct. It only takes one word left out or added to completely change the word picture.
