1500 neutral and reverse AGAIN

Post by Mightythordog »

1988 old story with these bikes, reverse and neutral. I started a new thread because I don't see all my issues.

Got new switch - as soon as plugged it in that green N lit up and bike started right up. GREAT!

Started it up a few times before I ut it all back together. All was well.

Moved it in first gear and now nothing. Same no green N and absolutely nothing when I push the start button. No R no N.

Cruise control will light up AND stay on if I have the button on.

We bypassed the switch, no N. We know the new switch is working.

NO, using the clutch will not let you start it. Same result, NOTHING.

Fuses, relay good. It seems putting into gear is the problem. By putting it in gear both times did this, BUT replacing the switch the first time seemed to fix it. Joke on me.

I want to bypass every safety feature on it at this point. Can I?

Short story on bike. I got it cheap because it has a ton of miles on it, when I can start it, it runs beautifully. Could not test drive because rear wheel had a sidewall bubble. This bike was someone's pride and joy and in almost mint condition. I am not a newbie to Goldwings, I own 5 now, but this is my first 1500. What a pain. I have an 1100 that I have been driving for 41 year, another 1100 to keep the first one going, 1200 I drive around and an 1800. And right about now I would rather be changing the air filter in the 1800.

HELP

So now what?

Do you have the wiring diagram for 88?
You could bypass the safeties, but you would likely lose reverse.

Yes I do and I don't need reverse. I have used it twice on my 1800 and the first time was just to see all the fuss. At this point I just want it running like I know it can.

If worse case scenario and the neutral or gear postion sensors are bad can I over ride with an aftermarket gear indicator?

Yes I plan on running many tests but have to plan ahead.😎

Not really as most of the aftermarket gear indicators use the stock switch.
You need to test what works and what doesn't and then you can come up with a game plan of what features you can keep, what you will fix, and what you will bypass. Reverse is the only complicated part as it has over-speed and over-current safeties along with an analog control box and various switches. The start safeties are just switches and a diode or two. Simple to get working.
I know the wiring is a lot different on the 88-89 bikes. I don't know if that applies to the reverse/start system as I don't have an 88-89 wiring diagram.

The reverse lever on left side. Tested the he'll out of almost everything to do with reverse. Sadly we are leaning toward gear position or neutral.
