Melted Relay Socket, 2000 Goldwing

Post by mljudge »

Hi all, I have a 2000 Goldwing and the socket that the headlight relay plugs into has melted. Do I need to find a whole relay/fuse box or is there a socket that I can use to bypass the melted one? Thanks for your help.

First thing to do is the WHY it melted. Would start with an amp draw test and if anything aftermarket is wired into the circuit.

Nothing aftermarket there now, but the PO had some funky lighting wired in there. The socket was partially melted when I got it, and it looks like the relay isn't making good contact anymore.

First off I would check any aftermarket accessories you or a previous owner has installed to find out what is drawing enough power to melt the relay socket. This system is designed to not have such a power draw. Or if you have had something off the bike that could have pinched a wire on the frame. After the cause is found and corrected you should replace the relay box but you can mount an external relay and reroute the wires. Relay connectors are available from some auto parts stores.

If it's like my 92 Goldwing, there is a high beam relay and a low beam relay. Check all that extra lighting wiring and disconnect it from the headlight wiring and power the add on lighting with it's own relay and fuse where the relay is activated from the accessory connectors at the top of the fuse box.

Definitely check for an excessive draw as mentioned above but keep in mind that a loose wire connection especially the ground pin can cause a LOT of extra heat and has been the reason for the demise of many a wire connector/housing.
