ALT light is on voltage at battery is 14.2

Post by sidecarwilliam »

I was riding home on my GL1500SE (1996) when the alt light came on. Went home and ordered a new alternator from Amazon. Installed new alternator and got 14.1 volts at battery and the light is still on. Checked wires and fuses again and got the same result. Got a new alternator the next day in installed it today and reconditioned the battery and made sure it was charged (13.2 VDC) Started the bike and still the light is on and I show 14.2 volts at the battery.
Now what????
Thanks in advance for the help.

I forgot to add that I have an inline meter installed by the PO so I don't know where it is connected. It shows about 1 VDC less than my meter at the battery.
Could the problem be in there somewhere? If so do you have any idea where I might look?

sounds like your alternators are good but your light is inaccurate

That would be my thought but what activates the alt light?
Any ideas?

somewhere between the light and where it is getting its power is a little devise in the line, i suspect that devise is what is falsely triggering the light.

If your getting 14.2 volts at the battery your charging system is working fine.

I know this is covered in the other post, but GL1500's from the factory do not come with an ALT warning light, so what you have is aftermarket - and it sounds like it has failed somehow. It could also be a problem with the wire feeding it - with a bad connection, it could be reducing the voltage reaching the monitoring circuit, which will make it think the alternator has failed.
