driven flange

Post by csj »

I am attempting to take the rear wheel off my 2000 gl1500SE. I'm using the DIY article 'How to remove and replace your rear wheel'.
I've gotten to steps 34 and 35, where you move the rear wheel left, and try to keep the driven flange attached to the wheel.
Well that didn't happen.
The driven flange stayed in the pumpkin and does not want to move out. I just gently tapped the wheel, it jumped to the left,
to my surprise, and left the driven flange stuck.

I could use some inspiration on how to proceed. Cannot move the wheel out with the flange stuck there.

Sounds like the splines might be a bit rusty. It might require a bit of persuasion with a block of wood and a hammer. Some kind of spray penetrating oil may help, too.

Penetrating Oil in, give the flange a wiggle. It moved.

Put the axle back in, lined up the flange with its mate in the wheel. Slid the flange across.
Pulled out the axle. Wheel came right out. Cool.

Thank you very much for the tip. The splines were rusty looking, but wet.
Likely the P. Oil. Thanks again.

I got some big maintenance ahead of me.

Don't scrimp on lower priced Moly Paste.
Yamaha's lube isn't sufficient enough in Molybdenum.
Molybdenum. (muh-LIB-duh-nuhm)
I prefer...
Molybdenum. (mah-LEEB-Den-um)

.

I prefer Tomatoes (To-MAY-Tos). They taste much better than Tomatoes (To-MAH-Tos).
