noises
just picked up a 94 gl1500. I've noticed while cruzing i get a knocking/grinding noise from what feels like my feet. only while I'm barley coasting. will not make noise on throttle or fully off throttle. ive heard about the u-joints... hoping it would be that as opposed to something internal in the engine or gearbox. any thoughts or sugestions would be appreciated. thank you.
Re: noises
I think your diagnosis is correct. You should get that buzz at almost any speed during no load on the shaft.
At any speed have you slightly throttled & de-throttled several times to hear or feel that clunk?

Re: noises
yeah i felt it today trying to get a better idea of what's going on. if I lightly snap my wrist and let off it clunks once on the snap and once on the let off. its mainly around 50ish is when its the worst
Re: noises
On the center stand and in 1st gear you could rock the wheel with your other hand on the drive shaft tube.
Also could use a long screwdriver as a stethoscope and check various places on the tube while 'rocking the wheel'... says grandma.
U-joint is near the engine. Always the chance it's one of 2 splines going out & wobbling.

Re: noises
very good. i will try that tomorrow. and start looking for a new u joint and probably some swing arm tool it looks like ill need. i appreciateit very much. thank you. wouldnt happen to know if a reputable place to get some parts? lol
Re: noises
I have 2 spare Schwing-arms, could part with one. Doubt yours is bad.
My intention was to cut out & plate weld for wider car tire but both sides are rather tight interior wise.

Re: noises
i doubt it. i can live with a dent or 2 in the tube. as long as its just cosmetic and not ground through the tube. 98k miles. I just want to get her back to road worthy. then start going through it.
Re: noises
Both tubes are untouched.

What you're describing is classic u-joint slop. Time to start planning to replace it.grimreaper615 wrote: ↑Thu Aug 03, 2023 10:15 pm just picked up a 94 gl1500. 40200-MZ0-A00
Mr.Cycles usually has the best prices for OEM parts. $157
Check the splines where the driveshaft slides in, too. You might need a shaft if it was run without moly for a long time.

Re: noises
You should have a read through: How to replace your universal joint (and driveshaft)

Re: noises
Would that be the shaft through the trans? I'm an auto tech so I'm great with cars. Not bikes yet tho lol. And I've heard there's a tool needed for the rear swing arm also
