1989 GL1500 Rear Rim

Post by ginblueearth »

I have a question about the rear rim on a 1989. GL1500. I have a friend that had a 1998 GL 1500 he sold it. He had a spare rear rim that was in perfect condition. But he didn't give it to the person that bought the motorcycle from him. He asked me if I wanted it. He gave it to me free. The only thing that I can tell that is different is the brake rotor. It has different slots in it. Can somebody out there tell me if there is any other differences between a 1989 and a 1998 rear Rim. I have a new rear tire that. I'm gonna install on the spare rim. the 98 rim. if it's the same. and put that on my 89. and not bother taking the Tire. Off. the rim. when I change. I'm just gonna take the rim and tire. out and put the new one in with the new tire on it. if they can be interchanged. I appreciate any advice and help you can give me. Thank you in advance. On the drive side they switched the number of drive pins 5 vs 6. Also one is made to run the pins dry while the other gets moly paste lube. 88-89 are different in quite a few details.

So I guess if I understand right, they started making things better with the. 1990 model. The rim that my friend gave me. Has the deal with the pins in it and everything? Would I be able to use that rim? It seems like it's all complete. Or are the splines different. Where they connect with the ring and pinion? Like I said, the rim is in perfect condition. No corrosion on the bead Area. I was hoping just to put the tire on that rim. and take the one off and put this one right on. But the question is, is if the spine on the deal that has the pins are the same where they connect into the ring and pinion That would be the only problem area. Do you have any idea on That. Thanks for any answer you might have. Glen Murra
