Water pump swap

Post by Wingnut95 »

Hi Winger,
Need your help. I have a 95 SE that needs a water pump replacement. I have a 90 that I was hoping to use only to discover that it is a slightly different design. Do you think I can swap over the cover plate from the 95 pump onto the 90 water pump housing and still use it? See photos attached.

Thanks in advance.

Looks like it could work however the impeller could be a little different inside and, if it is different, it may not circulate coolant through the two smaller hoses on the cover properly . And then, it may be a little different where it inserts into the engine case. I purchased a new water pump for my 92 GL1500 Interstate from Cyclemax and they sent me one for 1997 through 2000. They look identical at first, but, they are different. I paid about $180.00 for it, plus shipping. When I opened the box, the water pump is sealed in a plastic bag. Once I looked at them together to make sure they were the same, which they looked exactly the same, I tore open the plastic bag. Then I removed the old pump and found that the back end is a little different and would not seal in the engine case. Then, when I called Cyclemax they told me that after I opened the plastic bag, they would not take it back and exchange it for the proper one because it is now considered USED. So, I bought another one from another seller and now I have this one for 1997 through 2000 that I want to sell for $150.00 to get most of my money back. You won't know if this pump will work until you take them apart and inspect them thoroughly. Good Luck
Russell

Thanks Russel. I’ll have a closer look at the parts and provide an update for everyone when it’s all apart.

It appears that the two pump bodies are the same including drive shaft housing length. Also appears that the cover from the ‘95 will effectively fit into the the ‘90 housing body. More to come once I have it in and fired up.

Put everything back together, filled the fluids and all appears to be working as it should. I guess you can swap pumps from a 1990 to a 1995 along with the faceplate.
