2000 Goldwing SE Alternator Replacement

Post by RTEMBREE »

I am new at owning a Goldwing and recently purchased a new alternator to install. I got the old one out but I am wondering what to do about the old wire that goes up under the so called gas tank? Should I cut the existing and the new wire and splice them together or should I start taking parts off the bike in order to get the old connector wire out? I don't have an owners maintenance manual that shows the wiring diagram and figured I would have to take the electronics panel off in order see where the wire goes. Most videos that I see on Youtube show them cutting the wire and splicing the old to the new and covering the connection with heat shrink.

when I did mine i cut the wire and put quick connects near the alternator where I could get at it easily the next time I replaced the alternator. Don't know what brand of alternator you bought but I went through 5 aftermarket alternators before buying a honda OEM alternator. OEM alternators are expensive but not as expensive as 5 aftermarket ones. I got anywhere between 10 and 20 K on each aftermarket alternator.

If you still have the original, consider a rebuild, or at least save it in case your aftermarket doesn't perform well.

I just removed the plastics and plugged it in where it belonged.
Not that hard to do it correctly.

Don't want to hijack this listing but feel I'm in a similar forum. Yesterday I took my 89 1500 Goldwing out for a long ride and in the last block it died. I've discovered from reading it's most likely my alternator which I tested today with the bike running and I'm only getting the battery residual charge (approx. 12.4v) after an overnight trickle charge. So I took off the alternator and discovered a few things. It has a HITACHI LR140-708 alternator.

1) on the back of the alternator is a little black box that's bolted to the alternator however it looks like the metal flange attaching it to the back has broken and so it was dangling. Wondering if the attachment was a ground for it and might be the failure in the alternator?

2) Once removed, inside where the alternator "paddles fits into" the engine, there are 4 sets of little black pieces that slide over some mounts. The 2 pieces of each set are attached together by a little plastic tab. On one of the sets, the plastic tab is broken. Is this a problem?

Thanks in advance for your help. Not sure if maybe I'm just best off getting a new alternator, getting it rebuilt or if maybe the little black box being off is the problem, maybe I can just replace or somehow weld/braze the mount back to the alternator...

Thanks again.

The first item is a noise filter for the CB radio. It does need to be grounded to function but would not cause no alternator output.
The other items are rubber dampers that probably need to be replaced if they feel like plastic. Always a good idea to change them when changing the alternator.
