Full tune up / service now I have a stumble/backfire on acceleration

Post by Bonnie and Clyde »

Ok I have a 1999 SE with 23k miles. Ran smooth before I tore it apart. Just did timing belts, new plugs, coolant flush, air filter and fuel filter. Tires and brakes but that shouldnt matter. Put it all back together and now on 1st - 3rd acceleration I have a stumble and when I roll off the throttle a light back fire. I didnt touch the carbs or air box. Any pointers or threads relating to this would be great.

I double checked all my timing marks after putting the belts on and turning the engine over by hand counterclockwise. Then put the cover on. Should I pull the the timing cover after running it now? I guess that wont hurt to check. Or maybe I got the plug wires mixed up? I think if I did the plug wire mix up it would run way worse. It starts and idles fine. Any help would be great thanks.

More than likely the plug wires are crossed. They are numbered 1-3-5 front to back right side and 2-4-6 front to back for the left side.

When I put belts etc on mine I was worried that it would happen to me.
What the manual has, I will look for more, hopefully to help you
