Cranks but no spark no start

Post by Theros88 »

1996 Gl1500 Aspencade

I bought the bike a few months ago. There was a hole on the clutch line. It was towed to the mechanic. They are experienced motorcycle mechanics but not specialized on Honda Goldwings.

The bike started fine before putting on the lift.
Disassembled and replaced the clutch line.
While they were at it they replaced the thermostat for the fan as well.

Now the bike is back together, the engine turns when the ignition is pressed but no spark. Funny thing is that the engine turns at all three starting positions.
Battery is new.
They checked continuity to the spark plugs.
Plugs are good.
Fuses are good. Light panel turns on when key is on and switch is on.
Roll sensor is checked.
Center stand is on.
Side stand is off.
Neutral light is on.

The bike has been there for a couple months. They have not thrown the towel yet. But they have gone through the service manual checklist and are running out of ideas. The next thing they are checking tomorrow is the switches. The last thing is the ECU.

Do you have any new ideas?

Thank you

I wonder if it is related to this post about no spark after changing the thermostat. However, the issue was not resolved in this post.

Check the wire connections under the kill switch. Vibrations will cause the screws to loosen and then there is no connection. Check the connector on the ECM that controls the engine electronics. Check the connector that leads to the three ignition coils for connectivity and ignition positive and ground. If that checks out, check the ignition switch connector.

Have them Load Test the battery. If it sat for two months it could need charging. Also, if the ECU doesn't get at least 10.2 (?) volts it won't send power to the fuel pump.

It’s a new battery. But I will ask him to check regardless.

Measure the voltage at the coils, with the key on, and while cranking.

That's your problem. The GL1500 needs a lot of power to generate spark. If your voltage is dropping to 10 volts while cranking, it doesn't have enough voltage to generate spark. Your battery is likely the problem.

Have a look at this video, starting at the 3:33 mark:

I have the same issue with a bike I just picked up. I think I found the issue, will know in a few days. My ECU was full of fire ants. It was strange I had it running when I got it home then lost spark. I ordered an ECU today, I hope it works.
