Relay

Post by Whitewing1223 »

Hello!

I need to replace my Relay #3. I found this on cyclemax.com. Please click on the link. Will this work on my 1996 Goldwing SE? Thank you.

The best source for GL1500 relays is right here.
Scott who runs this forum has sourced some 30 amp replacements that are good quality and direct replacements.
Click on Store above and look for Goldwing GL1500 G8MS-H30 Relay. They replace all but one of the Honda relays, so grab a few spares for the future.

Thank you very much! I thought Scott is no longer selling those since I saw a video of him saying he no longer sell them. But I’ll check it out. Thanks again.

I think that was the previous supplier that he couldn't get them from anymore. He has since found another source and tested them to make sure they are up to our standards.

That figures. Because I was able to order today. And what I just discovered was that the relay that needs to be replaced is the 40 amp brand that I just ordered! It’s got a burnt smell. I hope that the cause is just due to operation/activation. I shall see about that. In the meantime, I moved the Air Pump relay to tue Main/Tail relay. The fuel gauge, temp gauge and are now working, just can’t use the air pump while waiting for my order to arrive. Thanks again.

My relays are 40 amp, not 30, and I'm definitely still selling them - I just got a case of another thousand of them from the manufacturer that arrived the other day!

You're saying it's one of MY relays that burned? If so that, would be the first time I've ever heard of this, in all the many thousands that I've sold. One of the main reasons that I sourced the 40 amp relays for the 20 amp application was to try to make them last longer than the OEM relays, and the number of failures (I think two so far) has borne that out.

I would have a look at the relay and socket contacts - if they are dirty, it can cause resistance, and in high-amperage current draw, that can generate enough heat to melt things. It's the same reason the "three yellow wire" stator connection melts on the four-cylinder wings. If that's the case, and it is oxidation on the relay socket, just popping another relay in there is not going to fix it, because the same thing will happen again. I'd suggest spraying the relay socket contact points with a quality electrical cleaner - I suggest CRC electrical cleaner, which I have used for years.

Hi Scott,

Yes, I will apply the spray cleaner you mentioned. Attached is the photo of the burnt relay. The casing doesn't look melted but I noticed the terminals were dark not like the copper color of the other relays. I smelled it and it smelled burnt. Thanks for the input!
