School me on air shocks and or aftermarket suspension

Post by Bonnie and Clyde »

I have a 1998 Voyager xii that I put YSS progressive coil over shocks on and its a world of diffidence. I just found a puddle of Tranny fluid under my 1999 GL1500 air shock. So should I rebuild the stock showa or go progressive coil overs or dual air shocks from a Harley or something. I ride mostly 2 up and having a air shock fail on a trip is no go for me so im reluctant to stick with air. I am all ears please and thank you.

Ok update. I just bought a pair of Progressive 416 air shocks 13.5 inchers off ebay. $210 shipped figured it was cheap enough to try. So how do I hook both shocks up the on board air system? Anyone have a manual for them? Or set up PSI help?

You will have to adapt the original air lines to suit. Progressive has removed most of the info on those shocks. You might contact them to see what they have.

Your favorite auto parts store will have air shock installation kits. Get one of those and you will have all the stuff needed to install both air shocks and tie into your existing system. That's what I have done on the 2 1500's I have owned or own. I am now on my 2nd and last 1500, a 99 that just rolled over to 42,000 miles. I will not live long enough to make even 100,000 so when I finally don't start someone else will get a good bike. LOL!! I am 78 years old and still on 2 wheels and plan to be for many more years!!

Long story short. I found my stock pump and leveling gizzmo not working correctly so I just eliminated it and set the 416s up with a hand pump. They seem to be holding air and ride well.
