Rebuilding Crashed 2000 GL 1500 Trike
Hello all! New to GW's but rider for 50 (scheeeze +) yrs.
Bought a salvage '00 Trike with only 49K. Superficial damage on fairing, left side. Easy rebuild. Only mechanical damage was vacuum canister, smashed interment cluster and pinched/compromised wiring harness. Purchased a used wiring harness and successfully installed it this weekend. Goblins and ghosts are pretty much gone EXCEPT a few important ones....
1. Lights, blinkers, 4-way, hi-low all work. Radio and CB are still disconnected. Upgrading to Bluetooth sound system.
2. Only oil light and hi beam come on dash during ignition. Bulbs have all been checked and worked prior to new harness. Hi beam indicator light is ON while low beam, OFF on hi beam! Weird. Also did it BEFORE the newer harness.
3. Starter button clicks relay, but NO START! Switched out a couple of relays just to see if that would change things... nope. Headlight turns off while starter button on, as supposed to. Bike's fairing etc is still uninstalled until I get this ironed out.
All pigtails switching over to the new harness have been checked and double checked.
I'm thinking there must be a safety switch for neutral that kills the starter? Could be why no neutral indicator light? (The light worked before...) I can't find a reference in my Clymer service manual. Any other safety switches that I should check?
I removed the kickstand switch prior and temporally connected the 2 wires completing the circuit, engine started/ran after this mod with old harness.
I still have 2 pigtails unaccounted for. Both near the alternator, next to kickstand switch pigtail. One appears to be a ground, second one red wire with black/white? (Not sure how to load a pic....)
Scheeeze. This is getting old. Thanks in advance. Harry in Tallahassee

Check the kill switch. As I understand the later 1500s won't turn over with the kill switch turned off or bad connections underneath. Also check the Bank Angle Sensor under the seat on right side which, I believe can be safely bypassed on a trike.

Should always be bypassed on a trike as the cornering forces can cause the engine to stall on you right when you really need it.Charlie1Horse wrote: ↑Mon Oct 16, 2023 9:45 pm Also check the Bank Angle Sensor under the seat on right side which, I believe can be safely bypassed on a trike.

Okay, I have continuity in GEAR SELECTOR SWITCH (green/red) KILL SWITCH and TIP SENSOR. I also read on this and/or another forum that I can bypass the tip sensor by connecting the white/red with the white. (Altho there was a conflict on which wires to cross, be it the green ground to one of those. Tried that and blew the 15amp lowest fuse on the panel...)
I have a click in starting relay A, and traced down to starting relay B. NO CLICK when start button is pressed. Ordered one on ebay, here by monday.
More will be revealed.
Still NO neutral light and have not gotten around to messing with reverse stuff.
Any further ideas or suggestions always appreciated. Thanks, Harry

The kick stand switch should have 3 wires. You want to bridge the green and the green/white. Cap off the yellow/black as it is for the dash warning light.
The bank angle sensor you bridge the red/white and the green. Cap off the white as it is power. You should hear relay 6 close when you bridge the wires.
Check for ground on the brown/red wire on start relay A. Check for power on the yellow/red wire when you push the start button.

Okay.... Thanks for the tips. I checked it out, all's connected properly.
Here's the weird thing: Got up this morning, sat in the recliner with my first cup of coffee to watch some utube. In my recommended list is a guy with the SAME issues I'm having: No neutral, reverse, cruise dash lights. NO start, too. Found it was the REVERSE SWITCH behind the reverse lever shaft. Went out to remove said switch, and by-golly, it's nonfunctional, no internal spring. Ordered one on ebay (new factory, $22) and should be here next week.
Hmmmmm.... More WILL be revealed. In the meanwhile I'll check the diode, etc.

Re: Rebuilding Crashed 2000 GL 1500 Trike
On going saga.... Still NO STARTER ENGAGED.
Replaced both REVERSE SWITCH and STARTER RELAY B. I now have a NEUTRAL LIGHT! I also have a CRUISE CONTROL light when the button is pushed in. But I also show CRUISE CONTOL SET when button is in. It will not shut off w/o the CC being disengaged. Is this normal?
When I press the starter switch the new RELAY B clicks loudly, headlight turns off temporarily (while button is depressed) but NO STARTER engaged.
I have by-passed the TILT and KICKSTAND switches per recommendations and checked KILL switch for continuity. All good.
Kicker is TWO THINGS: 1. Hi beam blue dash indicator light is ON while low beam, OFF on hi beam! 2. Dash DIRECTIONAL indicators lights are constantly lit ON but flash (work as should) while either 4-way and directionals are in use....? I'm guessing this is not normal.
Other than the no start, EVERYTHING WORKS as should. I do NOT have both radio and CB connected (that shouldn't matter, right?). And, no matter where the key is positioned, there is NO POWER going to PARKING (5th from bottom) fuse in the fuse block.....? Huh?
Thanks again in advance. Harry
PS: I want to thank the ADMIN of GoldwingDoc. The vids have been very informative. Yes, I subscribed and thumbed up!

OKAY! Progress! Cranking, no start!
Stripped her down to do a test on the starter and noticed that there was ONE 6 pin pigtail not attached to anything behind the battery... DUH! Plugged it in above the fender and WHAMMMMO I have a starter!
But no start. Making progress!......

Update: I have no power going to coils. Good continuity at kill switch, in fact, with switch off starter does not even engage. I will test relay 6 again.
I'm checking the reverse system today. I have not confirmed that that is working correctly. Downloaded the wiring diagram this morning. I have a neutral light again since replacing the reverse switch behind the reverse handle, but DO NOT show a reverse light on the dash. I still have a lone pigtail (one wire, black/white on left side above alternator) that I can't seem to find a match for....
