Cruise On slow to come on

Post by usedtobefast »

I have a 1994 SE and when I push the button to turn on Cruise, it does not light up the "Cruise On" light on the dash right away.

It seems to take 1-3 minutes for the "Cruise On" to light up. And when it does, all the cruise set functions work perfectly.

After the Cruise On light appears, if I turn the bike off, and then back on, the Cruise On light is on instantly.

Put I press the cruise button to turn it off ... then press the cruise button to turn it on ... I have to wait 1-3 minutes for the light on the dash to show Cruise On and then I'm able to Set/Accel, etc

Any ideas what is going on? I did some searches and saw tons of great info for troubleshooting not being able to set the cruise (or a lag when doing that) but that is not my problem ... all that works great once "Cruise On" shows up (like when I set a speed it is instant, accel, decel, all that works perfectly)

I just recently bought the bike and that is how it is working (so I assume at some point in the past it was instant on as you would expect)

The switch is gummed up with old dielectric grease. You can clean it out, or do what most do and just leave it on all the time. No real reason to ever turn it off.

This.
Just turn it on and leave it alone.
You can cancel cruise by taping front or rear brake, slightly pulling in clutch lever, or twisting the throttle “off”.

If you have the switch apart to clean the start switch, then sure clean the cruise as well, but just not worth it IMO unless you are looking for something to do.

OK, thanks guys. I wasn't sure if "Cruise On" ran some sort of checks before it lit up.

And today, in the morning it was taking 3 minutes to light up, but in the afternoon it was lighting up in 10-15 seconds! So maybe I'm working the gunk out of it. :)

More likely temperature. When it's warm the grease is thinner.
