Strange noise

Post by Rane »

Greetings:

I know I can't be the only one with this issue. After getting home and shutting off the engineI heard some intermittent 3- second sound resembling a faint horn coming from the engine area. Is this a major issue? I'm hoping it's nothing requiring attention.

The cooling system venting pressure can make noises.

Ok. Maybe I'll flush it one of these days.

Flushing won't stop the sound you are hearing, it is the gas cap relieving pressure from the tank. The next time you hear it loosen of the fuel gap and you should hear a whoosh of air. The thing is operating as designed.

I get that flushing won't stop the noise. I know it hasn't been done in at least 2 years and just talking about the cooling system makes me think I should. Chronic procrastination interferes. But yeah I'll experiment with the cap when I get home tonight.

It will be fine when you get home. The pressure inside the tank is when you stop after riding and the tank has pressure inside it. The next time you hear it remove the gas cap and you will hear the pressure release.

Good idea to flush the coolant if you don't know when it was flushed last.

Welp, I got home and heard nothing. I did fill it up earlier. Although I'm familiar with the pressure coming from opening the fuel cap I never heard the noise. Thanks to everyone here with the helpful information! I'll have plenty more questions in the future.

Final Update (I promise): So I flushed coolant over the weekend, and while draining I heard that noise holding that same note. Now I know what's what as I check off maintenance items.

Remove your gas cap and soak in Seafoam for about 3 days.
Shake it and clean it out.
Soak it again to remove any and all dirt and junk.

That's what I did to get rid of that whine ( horn ) noise in gas tank area

I soaked my cap in vinegar for about 4 days. I also used two different containers for my cap because of all the nasty stuff that was coming off. After 4 days I washed it with water, blew it off with compressed air and let it sit. When I finally put it back on the bike, it felt kind of loose. I'm wondering if this is how it is supposed to feel since it is designed to release pressure in the tank. It is tight in the sense that nothing can get in, such as rain or any other liquid but it just doesn't feel the same as before the vinegar bath. Can anyone tell me if your cap should move, even 1mm? My gasket feels fine, not cracking and not brittle at all. Should I just get a new gasket to be safe? Any help is greatly appreciated!

Sounds like your gasket may have shrunk. It should be an air tight fit.
