New to me 94 GL1500

Post by Pittburgman »

Hi all!

This is my new to me 94 GL1500. It quit while running for the PO. It does crank fine. I'll be looking here for ideas on what that issue could be.

Anyway, Here's my new baby... Not too bad for $400.

was it running and just stopped? easy stuff first, check fuel pump, fuel filter. I don't remember on the 1500 if it will turn over if the kill switch is bad.

Cool find, and welcome to your new project. The first thing I did when I got mine home was to take polishing compound and buff off all the pinstripes!
That's not just a motorcycle. It's a Gold Wing.

Apparently it was... He rode it all the time. It only has 44K for mileage, and its really nice. I am moving up from a burgman 650, which is a huge change, but I'm looking forward to it.

I will be looking at the fuel pump and filter as you have suggested. Not too sure what else I will find...lol

What my Honda GL1500 Service Manual states

While changing fuel filter, ( in same area ) take fuel petcock apart to see if diaphragm is torn, if so rebuild it.
Remove gas cap and soak in Seafoam a few days to clean it.

My fuel pump when bad but was a gradual process. It would randomly just bog down while driving. I would stop, wait a minute then it would function fine for a while, then repeat. I would rebuild fuel petcock, its cheap and easy to do, and fuel filter. Could possibly be the neutral detection switch on the kick stand (not sure that is really what its called). there are severl articles on GoldwindDocs that discuss.

Here'a a thought. These 1500 gls have to have optimum power in the battery to fire up. The battery can be good enough to turn it over, but has to be 100 percent to fire up

Tonight, after checking the fuses and found the bottom ignition fuse replaced with a micron fuse, put the proper fuse in...

Drained the old gas...

New Battery...

And after cranking off and on for a bit, she started right up!

Needless to say, I'm very happy!

I do have some things to track down, like non working lights here and there, but it runs!

Congrats on getting him/her running. It's the same color as mine. I hope you have many opportunities to use your new bag liners in the coming years.
