Braided Brake pipes

Post by agedbikeman »

Hi, has anyone ant experience of HEL braided brake pipes on a 1500, I've just fitted the front right brake and it seems too long, I measured it with the old one and it's about the same length, but it's much stiffer than the old rubber one, which seemed to bend easier to get rid of the unwanted length.

fitted it with the forks fully extended. any clues?

Alex

I put HEL braided lines on my 1500. They are stiffer, and can be a challenge to route as a result, but I just moved things slightly to ensure the radius of those bends was not too tight anywhere. Worked great.

Problem solved
I had it routed slighty wrong, when I re- routed it in the correct place it's ok now, pity I didn't find this out 'til after I'd filled it and bled it.

I took photos and will soon do a write up on the job, the main objective was to rebuild the master cylinder and change the brake line while about it, as usual , I invented ways to stop brake fluid splashes when you least expected it.

Thanks to anyone that helped

I bought the set of four braided lines a while ago.
Haven't installed them yet. That project is
scheduled for some time in the next two months before the bike goes back on the road in the spring.

Install a rear brake HEL line it was very nice. Wishing perhaps I had done front as well. Front replace was OEM.

Thanks for your reply, I managed to sort it, I was having a senior moment, I inadvertently threaded the pipe through the slot in the plastic direction cancel switch cover plate alongside the speedo cable, WRONG!!, when I put it in the right place, it fitted perfectly.

Not sure about "brake pipes", but as for braided steel brake lines from HEL, beware of poor fitting lines. I ordered a 4 line set for my 1981 GL1100i [ Kit #HBF2239 1980-81 Honda Goldwing 1100] and had to return the entire kit:

Excerpt from my reply to HEL re the rear line:

1. The Honda OEM line is measures 34 ½ inches when measured CTC from the banjo fittings. Your HEL line is 4” too long at 38 ½ inches CTC.
2. The Honda OEM line has banjo fittings that are 90º offset in relation to each other. You HEL line has banjo fittings that have 0º offset (they are parallel to each other).

Excerpt from my reply to HEL re the front lines:

• Front Top line (Master Cylinder to Splitter):
o OEM line is 21” long CTC and has a 20º bend banjo fitting at the Master Cylinder end
o HEL supplied line is 25” long, i.e. 4” longer than the OEM line and has straight banjo fittings at both ends

• Front Lower Lines (Splitter to Calipers)
o OEM lines are 20” long and have straight banjo fittings that are 90º offset relative to each other
o HEL supplied lines are 22” long, i.e. 2” longer than the OEM lines

Your experience may be different, but this is what happened to me......

Read mixed reports on HEL brake lines, maybe the problem is in the name, they missed out the second "L"
