Oil leak from where?

Post by bohdan »

Gents, A few weeks ago, my left foot had oil on it as well as the foot peg. Great I said to myself. I took off the front and tried to figure out where it was coming from. Its not the fork seal, but somewhere in the engine compartment. Maybe the camshaft oil seal? Valve cover gaskets? Don't see too much of a tread on the oil seal. Thoughts? Mighty obliged

Almost looks like it's coming from the valve cover...?
That's not just a motorcycle. It's a Gold Wing.

Check the vent hole in the water pump. It has two seals, one for the coolant and one for the crankcase/oil. One of these seals can leak and you will have coolant or oil dripping on the left front of the engine/and on your foot. It is a fairly easy job to change.

Thanks Gents. Good point about the water pump. But wouldn't I see a dribble right below the pump? when it is parked? The valve cover was an option. No picture of it, but the exhaust protector had a streak of oil going across it starting at the top. If you notice hte timing belt cover, there is a patch of oil there. How did that get there? Cheers

Any chance you have a bad oil filter gasket or two of them stacked up?

Time to clean everything up to get a fresh look.

I'd hose that all down with brake cleaner to get rid of the oil, then dust the area with a light coat of talc. Run the engine or go for a short ride and you'll very quickly and easily see exactly where it's coming from.
