starter issue

Post by Nlmman47 »

i have an 89 1500 i am rebuilding. redone the carbs and it was running but now it wont start. i can here the solenoids click and sometime it makes a wined sound. i had that happen on my 93 but it was a bad connection on the ground of the battery. but battery is good. what would be my best way to check the start system out or does someone know what it would be. this just all of sudden started. any help will be appreciated.

Is the noise from the starter running, but not turning the engine?
Check for power in and out of the solenoids.

I believe on the 88-89 one solenoid switches power and the other one switches ground.

Possibly, you would have to do some testing. I don't know much about the 88-89. Do you have the service manual and wiring diagram?

I didn't understand if the starter motor works or if you just press the start button and nothing happens.
At night and at 100 it is not noticeable.

I press the button and the solenoids just click. I don't seem to have control voltage to the solenoids I'm not sure what to check next. But I can't even jump the starter. I'm missing something

Do you have the wiring diagram? You are going to need it.

Put the key in the ignition, ready to start, and with a screwdriver (and very carefully) touch the 2 nuts on the switch next to the battery, it should turn the starter motor.

i have look at most of the switches i can thank of and nothing is working. i guess i am going to have to trace the wire from starter button to starter. its not easy to trace the wire diagram when not sure where everything is. unless i am missing something some one might have a clue or suggestion I'm all ears.

Electrical diagram in hand and tester, cable by cable, continuity tests according to color and initial and final connector. This is how I solved a problem I had in my 88 with reverse gear.

The ETM will tell you where every component and connector are located with a description and photograph.
