Way back in 2000 I posted the fix for this idle surge. Pull the air filter cover and plug both idle air jets with wooden toothpicks. This richens the idle mix and is the fix

Yes, I've done the toothpicks trick also around 2009.
It's a temporary fix but in months the issue returns with the toothpicks still in place.
I removed the picks & inserted a partial blockage, that worked for a several years but eventually it returned.
While riding I thought of what I read about working the idle screw. Hence since then the carbs been working normal & respectable fuel mileage has returned.
