Broke the air shock mount ear

Post by eightball1013 »

I was trying to service the rear end and broke (air shock ear) the ear off the drive case! catastrophic! Does anyone know what I did wrong? what's the proper procedure. I thought it was just a bolt. I don't suppose it can be repaired without a used part, after all it looks like cast alloy. will any final drive work from gl1500 years? I have 1998SE Goldwing. I am sick about it obviously. Any advice would be appreciated.

97-2000 Share the same part numbers. Not sure if an earlier one will work.

I am looking at shock bolt - Looks like there is a sleeve seized on the bolt?

Is that sleeve supposed to move freely? on the shock bolt?

That sleeve is part of the lower shock bushing.
And the shock bolt should look like this.

The sleeve is seized! so, when I backed it out it pushed(broke) the ear. It did not take much force. I can't get the sleeve off it is on there good. Applied heat it's still on there on there. Gonna order that bolt but can't find the sleeve in diagram. I need to find out if another final drive will work from other years. It sucks b/c mine looks to be in perfect shape. I bought the bike 2 years ago with unknown maintenance. Other years look like exactly the same. a lot on eBay. but I think gearing maybe the difference. This website is a blessing for sure! Ebay says it will work for the 92 GL1500 but I don't know.

If anyone knows if pre 97 final drives will work on my 98 SE, I sure would appreciate it. And if the gearing is exactly the same. Also, the air shock collar/bushing I need. can't find a part number.

You are correct, that the sleeve was seized onto the bolt and when you backed the bolt out it snapped the aluminum tab/ear off.
I broke one on my wing, the same way.

I got the sleeve off the bolt and bolted the broken tab/ear back on, using the now floating sleeve as a spacer. You could use a thin washer between the sleeve and tab/ear, to held square the broken tab/ear. Take it to a good welder and had him weld it on. Worked for me and a lot cheaper than a replacement drive.

Obviously, you'll have to get the sleeve free/floating before you do this. Grease the sleeve and bolt prior to reassembling.

Let us know how it all works out.

Thanks for the reply ! I got
The sleeve off with a lot of frustration on blaster and heat. I cleaned up the bolt, and sleeve. I can reuse them it will be
Ok. My friend works as a tig welder in fabrication shop. They seem to think they can weld no problem. From what I understand they say it should be ok. I did buy a new case of eBay for a 2000 SE. but I will need to move all inside stuff from mine to that one. I don’t know if these are like regular diffs where you need set the lash or what. What a nightmare!

Yes, it is a hypoid gearset and you will have to set bearing preload and gear backlash and pattern. Fortunately, all the adjustment shims and spacers are still available from Honda, but it really helps to have a box full of them for measuring a setup, rather than trying to figure out what you need and ordering them one at a time.

I figured! lol I will have to look at a repair manual to see if any special honda tools are needed. See if I can do it myself. I have not touched a diff since the 80's

They can be welded by a good aluminum welder. I have one pictured below. I also found a good one online, the whole assembly. Just bolted it on as it was after I checked it out for play and leakage. I’m pretty sure gear ratio is the same on all the drive assemblies from ‘90 on up. Sure someone will correct me if I’m wrong.
