1990 GL 1500 engine noise

Post by Nlmman47 »

i been restoring this bike and every time i ran it sound fine. the other day i started it after a few days of it sitting there. and when i hit the start button i notice a metal clinking noise, not a heavy sound but defiantly a metal sound. i not sure if it jump time a little but i would think i get more than that. maybe i have a lifter stuck and the valve is tapping. needless to say i never crank it over dont want to damage more than it is. anybody have an ideal or had that happen to them. any info would be appreciated. before i start heads off and checking timing

You can check for a broken timing belt, but if that is the case, chances are the damage is done.
Did you replace the belts?

no i havent yet, but i am going to investigate it first to see if i am out of time. but it realy dont sound like that but i could be wrong. engine turn over easy but its more of a ticking noise. but i still going to check the timing just to be sure.

Ticking is usually a valve adjuster. They can leak down on bikes that sit. Usually come back with a few oil changes and some riding, but some have had to take them out for cleaning.

I my 88 has 136k, I changed to 15-40 Rotella T6 and a Mobile1 filter, and put in about 10oz of Mystery Oil, in about 500miles my noises are almost gone
I noticed yesterday, that raising the idle to 1500rpm, the issue went away to kinda an oil pressure thing, others have taken out the adjusters and the Honda Service book
says to clean and soak in Keroscene.. which I may do at some point..

I created a post a couple weeks ago about this issue.
