Blackwing vs Superbrace fork brace

Post by waywing »

I am shopping around for a front fork brace. I bought a cheap knockoff and it is junk. So I am looking for the Superbrace or Blackwing brace, and am having trouble finding either. Does anybody know anything about this?

Yes, and their web page gives no information on how to order. Their phone number just goes to voicemail. And superbrace says that they are out of stock

You may be out of luck. I know the inventor died a few years ago and production was transferred to someone else.

I know wingadmin and others like them, but I have posted before that I believe Blackwing is/was a poorly designed and manufactured product through a shady company. Regardless, they are closed and now available only in the used market. Superbrace is a true American engineering and machining company and readily available through a reliable dealer network though GL1500 parts may be more limited.

I know they are out of stock, but have you contacted the company to see if they can give you an ETA?

If you want to know the differences, WingAdmin did a great write up.

I think Blackwing Lady did a great job correcting the deficiencies of other braces, and I was sorry to see her go.
I was able to get one of her great products back in the day. I know without her the company went downhill.

Might be worth a call to see if they are thinking days, weeks, months, years, never...

Another option that is now possible is to have one made to order. It's crazy but with places like Send Cut Send, PCBWay, and other online CNC services, you can send a CAD model and they will send you back a finished part. The prices are unbelievably low compared to way you would pay a job shop for a one off back in the day.

I tried calling superbrace and their toll free and regular land line both give you a recording that your call cannot be completed. Doesn't sound too promising

Doesn't sound good. I guess watch ebay or have one made. One of the issues of having a 25 year old bike.

I went down this fork brace rabbit hole last year. Not much is available these days. Long story short I ordered one off of Amazon. It looks well made and installed easy enough and does the job.

[ Amazon brace ]
That's the CCP lower quality knockoff.
(added)JUST remembered... someone in Saunders site was making those plugs I mentioned below. have no idea where to look, been WAY to long ago.

If you can find 4 plugs that will fill the hold-down screws, taper drill the brace's holes so the matching tapered screws will basically LOCK any sloppy movement. That'll go a long way for an overall more solid'er'er brace.

IF I needed a brace, those Send Cut Send, PCBWay, etc's., sound like the way to go cost wise.
Heck, have them make you extras & after your installation finding out it fits, THEY WILL SELL. ;)
Come to think about it, the bike recycle places I never see those 'Black Wing' braces for sale.

.
When I do one thing, I'll sidestep a little & learn many things.

Anyone on the fence about fork braces needs to do this quick check.

Turn handlebars to full lock left or right. Sit down in front of wheel and grab a handful to turn the wheel against the stop. In my younger days I moved ’82 Aspencade wheel about 2 inches. I was fighting sloggy steering on new sidecar rig. Like fading brakes I found myself having to steer further into corners to hold line.

Week later I installed Superbrace style dog bone. Steering was rock solid. Honda added their own brace the next year.

The difference between the Superbrace and the Blackwing brace was like night and day on my 1500. My 1500 was wobbly and vague on high speed sweepers when I hit bumps (think highway on-ramps) with the Superbrace. When I replaced it with the Blackwing brace, it transformed the front suspension into a rock-solid, stable system.

Blackwing braces are rare and hard to find, but if you can find one, put it on and chuck that Superbrace in the trash - you'll love it.
