94 GL 1500 been sitting for a couple years

Post by waynedudes »

I had all but quit riding. But would start bike every once in a while... Bike would not idle without choke. Removed as much fuel from tank as possible. Without removing it. Filled tank with premium and added can of sea foam. Still not running correctly without choke. Removed breather and sprayed carb cleaner into carbs. Seemed to help a bit? But still does not idle properly? I am now thinking about completely removing tank. To drain out every drop of fuel. Another new fuel filter... Maybe I need the carbs rebuilt? But it ran great until I let it just sit there and collect dust???? Bike is a 94 with under 54,000 miles on it. It is also a CSC trike conversion. Or maybe I just need to ride it to get the bugs out... If I knew exactly where the bugs were at?

The carbs are probably gummed up. You can try running Seafoam through it. Might take a dozen tanks of fuel/cleaner to fix it, or it may never come around. The other option is to pull the carbs and go through them.

Have you driven it? If it was me and the unit can be driven at all, I'd drive it.

It might just clean itself up in short order.

The idle jets are probably clogged. The have a tendency to get that way if the bike sits for an extended period of time.
Running Sea Foam will help but like Rambozo says, it may take multiple tanks. The quick, albeit expensive method, is to have the carbs removed, cleaned and rebuilt. Had that problem with a '99 I owned.

I sprayed an ample dose of carb cleaner into the carbs while running. About 3/4 of a can of sea foam added to fuel tank. Let it run for a while. Drove it down the road and back seems to be getting better. It will at least idle now. Still some rough running at low rpms. Thanks for the advice. On Da Road Again!

Ride out all of the seafoam tank.
Next tank, pour in a whole can of Berryman B12 into a full tank. No need for premium, 87 is sufficient.

I swear by B12, it works. If idle is your problem, let it idle for extended periods of just idling on the heavy dose of B12.

You’ll see!
