Gl1500 1988

Post by liquineer »

I have a gl1500 built in 1988 and sold into California. At some point it ended up in the U.K. and I bought it around 15 years ago.
The speedometer cable has broken, as I don’t get a speed indication whilst riding. But because it is USA spec, I’m not sure what part number I should use to get a replacement. Would it be the same cable, as if the Goldwing had been sold for the first time in the U.K. from new, or would it have a different part number?
I’m about to change the front speakers on my bike ( the cone of one has disintegrated) and this would be a good time to replace the cable for the speedometer.
If I search online in the U.K. I can see a number of companies offering new cables, not to expensively , and I’m just wanting to get a sense if I need to order elsewhere to get the right part or if it is universal.

The complete cable will be 44830-MN5-000
Just the inner portion will be 44831-MN5-000

Thank you. That’s what I thought, but i needed to check. I’ll see if I can order a replacement inner, or failing that, the whole cable.

If the inner has failed on a bike that old, the outer needs to be replaced too. Buy the entire cable. You will be happy you did. They are not expensive.

Thank you , I did order a new complete speedo cable fitting.

On a related subject- ie same bike, I fitted a new reverse switch, as it seemed the old one had failed.
But it’s still not reversing when I put the handle into reverse position and press the starter switch. When I first switch the bike on, the R light does come on, but pulling the handle into the correct place, for reversing , the light doesn’t illuminate. I had previously checked all the fuses I could see , and all looked fine.
It may be there’s another fuse or a relay that I have to check?
Any suggestions are welcome. I’ll be showing my Goldwing trike at a local bikes and cars show at an airfield museum not far from me this weekend, and will carry on with the work after that.
