My 1500 is eating fuel pumps

Post by flanzajr »

I have posted in the forum before about resurrecting a 96 Aspy. After many trials and not many tribulations I have it running decently but it keeps burning out fuel pumps. The original was bad after sitting for 8 years and I bought a new complete unit. The tank is clean, very clean. After about four months of hardly running the pump motor went open circuit. I bought a replacement motor only and now that has also failed, going open circuit again. I have checked the ground from the tab on the pump to negative batt and the ground wire to negative batt. Both about 10 ohms. I checked resistance between the terminals under the pump as well and it is 0 ohms. I have checked voltage to the pump during cranking and I'm at about 11 volts with a shade over 13 volts running. Am I just a victim of shoddy parts or is there something else going on that maybe someone else has come across? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks very much in advance.

Was that an OEM pump?
You would have to take apart the pump and see what failed and why. More than likely a manufacturing defect.
You didn't by chance use any exotic fuel? Some racing fuels destroy standard fuel pumps.

Well I thought it was an OEM pump but probably not. I'm going to check with my local Honda dealer and see if he has anything in stock. I'm tired of replacing that's for sure. The motor itself is not the easiest thing to get apart, but if continuity is lost I can probably safely assume that the windings are cheap and just self destructed. My fuel is clean and so is my tank. I spent much time cleaning and re-cleaning the tank. No exotic fuel in it although I initially thought I might have had too much SEAFOAM in it that might have caused the first replacement to fail but not now. Probably my fault for buying off the internet but wanted to make sure there was not a systemic problem out there that the forum might have addressed. I'm really chomping at the bit to ride this thing. The cold weather is rapidly approaching and I've only put a total of 60 miles on it, mostly trying to sort out problems I wound up causing myself. I just did a one day pull and replace carbs on it after I realized I had the float level too low on one and replace the accelerator pump diaphragm I thought was good. I was thrilled it was running so well and them the pump... I'm getting really good at R&R of the plastics!!
