Progressive 412 shock install? Which way do they go?

Post by Quick Cal »

I'm embarrassed to ask, but which way does the off set on the bottom eye go?

The eye on the bottom is off set to one side and is not perpendicular to the shock body. The oem shocks are not like this, as far as I could tell. When I initially installed these I put them on how I thought they went, which is just opposite of the pic below.

I had installed a different final drive at the same time and the axle bolt was hitting the right side muffler. That was a red flag but I thought I had the wrong final drive. I'll skip past that story right now.

So now I have the bike tore apart again. I still think the final drive is too far over to the right. So I tried switching the shocks around to see what happens. I really couldn't tell which way the shocks are supposed to go. No matter which way I installed them I could not get the swing arm to shift over. I also checked the swing arm bushings with nothing attached to it. It had no movement.

I have a sidecar. While working on this I had the bike on the center stand and a jack under the mounting bracket for the sidecar. After putting it all back together I lowered the jack. I heard something pop. I thought stuff was going back into alignment? Or the jack popping on the frame?

I did ride the bike around the neighborhood like this but really couldn't tell anything. But now that I have it on the ground and took this pic I can say this does not look right to me. I think I had it right the first time.

Which way does the off set go? Both sides to the inside, outside, one in, one out? Please help,,,,lol.
