My Dad passed away on August 6th and left me his '98 GL1500 with 143k miles. I rode it from Houston, Tx to DeRidder, La for Dad's graveside service and back to Shreveport, La. The ride went to crap about halfway back to Shreveport and I found the left fork seal was blown. Got it home and headed off to work. Got home a week later and the battery was dead. I replaced it with a Noco NLP20 (500cranking amp) lithium battery. Got the bike fired up and the alternator was out. Dropped it off at the alternator shop and should have it back this week. I ordered all of the seals and bushings for the forks, brake pads and wheel bearings which should be in this week as well. I also ordered a shifter support, bluetooth module and USB outlets and a volt meter. When I pulled the bolt on the left engine guard to install the shift rod support, the engine guard had a stripped bolt and hole, a broken off bolt and the whole guard was bent and won't line back up ( Dad laid the bike down several years ago and this is what the repair shop did). Now I'm waiting on a new set of engine guards. I got new bulbs installed in the gauge cluster and installed the Bluetooth module, USB outlet and volt meter. It's looking like I won't be riding until after the first of the year with work obligations. I just got the replacement title to get the bike registered in Louisiana and haven't had the time or money to get that done yet. I'm still excited to get everything done and rain or shine or cold...I will be back on the road soon.
Engine guards =135.00
Fork Parts, brakes and bearings = 235.00
Battery = 200.00
Alternator rebuild = 100.00
Bluetooth, volt meter, USB outlet = 160.00
Shift rod support = 45.00
Registration = 155.00

Sorry to hear about your dad. Mine passed away two years ago and is in Jacksonville National Cemetery. That's Jacksonville, Florida. That's a nice looking ride. Looks just like my 92 Interstate, except for the silver exhaust covers on mine and even has the same seat cover. Also covered the back seat back with the red. I changed the valve covers with some off a 95 SE with the gold inlays and the engine crash guards to the later, 98 ones that look better to me. 175,000 miles on it and still running good. A little engine noise that it had when I bought it with 68,000 miles and hasn't gotten any worse. I need to replace the fork seals and bushings, like you and then I will be putting it up for sale. I replaced it last November with a 2002 GL1800, silver in color but, I like that Candy Spectra Red much better. Wish you luck in your repairs and a lot of fun riding afterwards. God bless.

Thank you! That seat is a Russell Day Long. Dad had it built about 23 years ago. I had one built for my VTX. Cost half as much as my VTX did and took 6 months on a waiting list, but worth every penny! Dad kept a file with every receipt and every penny that he spent on the Wing. This is Dad's original receipt for the Day Long Seat.

Please accept my condolences for the passing of your dad.
My dad has been gone for 23 years. Miss him daily
Looks like he left you a nice 98 Wing
A good year, if I do say so
Make sure you look in that pile of records to see if the timing belts were changed, I would think so based on the miles
Even though that bike is large, be careful on it as people don't see motorcycles
Take Care & best of luck
