Oil & Filter change?

Post by BugEyedTurkey »

I have a 2005 GL1800 with approx. 31,000 +- miles. How often should I change the oil & filter? Type oil?

I would suggest to change your oil every 4k or so. As far as the type and brand of oil you will get all kinds of responces and agruements over what is best. Personally I run Honda oil in my 1800 but in some of my other GW's I have ran other brands etc. I don't feel that the brand/type of oil is as importaint as simply changing your oil on a regualar basis.

There have been a lot of comments posted regarding oil change intervals and filters. I think the majority state between 3-5 K miles depending on the type of driving you do.

I have a 2009 GW and the dealer advised me not to go either semi or full synthetic until I reached the 10K mark. I was also told not to use Moly based oils either which I believe is in the owners manual. This holds true for my Honda Valkyrie which utilized the same GL1500 engine. That said the oil I use the regular Honda 10-40W oil in both bikes and it works fine.

Quote from service manual: Pro Honda GN4 or HP4 (without molybdenum additives) 4-stroke oil
or equivalent motor oil API service classification SG or Higher JASO T 903 standard: MA
Viscosity: SAE 10W-40
