How do I replace the front brake light switch?

Post by golfrussel »

My 2010 GL1800 brake lights are working correctly when using the back brakes. My brake lights are not working all the time when using the front brake handle. What's the procedure to replace the front brake light switch? Are there any you tubes out there showing this process?

It's really quite simple. You pull off the four connectors from the back of the switch (the upper, smaller connectors are for the brake lights), remove (I believe) one screw, and the switch comes right out. Installation of the new one is the reverse of removal.

Exactly where is it located? Do I have to remove the brake level? First time, just want to make sure I am doing it correctly.

I had the same problem. Sprayed the switch with WD40 but it didn't help. I unmounted the switch and rotated it while pressing the contactors to allow the WD40 to work it's way in and that fixed it.
Look under the brake lever and you will see the switch. One screw holds it in place, very easy to remove.
Good Luck.

It's accessible from the bottom of the handlebar, right at the base of the brake lever. Nothing has to be disassembled to get to it - just the one screw. Here's what the switch looks like:

WD-40 isn't the greatest stuff for cleaning switch contacts, particularly switch contacts that are in the open, exposed to dust and grit. WD-40 leaves behind an oily film that over time will collect all the dust and grime and cause the switch to stop working again. The best thing to clean the switch contacts is actual electrical contact cleaner that leaves behind no residue - CRC is a very good contact cleaner.

ten min. job at most like wing admin said. remove one screw pull off four wires two for brake other two for cruise control If I remember right there different size treminals so you can't mix them up. plug in wires install screw done go riding.. seems to be very common problem just replaced mine for the second time.. Can anyone tell me what the part number is for the front brake switch? Cheapest place to order would be great as well. I have a 2003.

Thanks.
