Neutral Safety Switch

Post by trikeman II »

I have a problem when trying to start my GL1800 when it's in gear. I pull back on the clutch arm and it still won't start, but if I put in neutral it will start. Can anyone tell me what is wrong or where to look???

Thanks

Do you have aftermarket grips that prevent the clutch lever from moving fully back when pulled? You should hear two distinct switch "clicks" when pulling it in - one when you just first start pulling it, that's the cruise disconnect switch. The second when you pull it in all the way, that's the one that allows you to start in gear.

Hello all Wingers

So sorry I forgot to post what it was that caused my wing not to start:
after replacing the old neutral safety switch it continued doing the same thing; what I found out was right behind the clutch lever is two small wires that plugs in
well grit, and dirt had gotten inside THE CONNECTORS I cleaned it with electrical contact cleaner and no more problems!

Thanks!

Had the same wires accidentally disconnect while washing my bike and drying it off. I felt releaved that I hadn't lost my mind. Also the switches occasionally need spraying with electronic cleaner and down the road to 60k miles its very likely the clutch lever bushing will wear enough that it prevents the lever from contacting the switch properly (it can also hamper cruise control); for about $20 you can order a set of replacement bushings and tool to replace them.
