Clutch issue / problem

Post by golfrussel »

I have a 2010 GL1800 with 55K miles on it. When I start the bike up in the cold mornings I have to hold the brakes to keep the bike from moving. I also have the clutch level all the way in. It's very hard to shift it out of gear. This morning I had to turn the bike off, shift it out of gear, then start the bike and let it warm up. Then I was able to shift the gears and I did not have to hold the brakes with clutch engaged. Has anyone had this issue? Is this a sign my clutch is going bad?

How cold is Turn the engine running noise
And as pumping the clutch handle it easily enters the course?
Soft handle? Maybe you have a zone system!
It is not good, but this is not some problem!

Could it be that you have air in the hydraulic clutch lines and this combined with thicker engine oil (due to the cold temp) is causing the clutch to drag more (Not fully disengage when you pull the clutch lever fully back), preventing you from changing gear? I would be looking to change the hydraulic fluid and bleed the clutch system first..

I am using 10W30. I always purchase my oil from the Honda dealer where I bought the bike.

2010, sounds to me like a "take it to the dealership" problem. As a previous poster mentioned, you may need to bleed the hydraulics on the clutch to get air out. It is under warrantee though, right? So let a dealership handle it, and you will know more when they are done. (if they are kind enough to share) It is what I would do.
It ain't about the destination - it's all about the journey

No, warantee long gone. I have 56K miles on this wing. I ride 150 miles round trip to work each day. The only days I don't ride it to work is when it's raining, when I get up. Love riding my wing.

Warranty--3 years, unlimited mileage. Depending on when you bought it, you may still be under warranty.

I am having the problem on my 2010 GL1800. Did you ever get this resolved? I have had the system bleed by a dealer with same issue.

The first question is if you have a stock clutch lever, and stock grip ??? Also, what brand oil and weight are you using ??? Your GL1800 work's best using Honda's GN4 10w-30, or any other conventional m/c specific oil that matches all the warnings and suggestions in an Owner's Manual.

If all the above is true, then adjust the clutch lever per the Owner's Manual > index > clutch system.

If that does not work, you may need to break the clutch plates loose by pulling in the clutch and rocking front/rear, until it free rolls prior to starting it.
