From the Honda service manual:
Remove the following:
– fuel tank
– reverse shift arm
Slide the rubber cap off the starter motor terminal and remove the terminal nut and starter/reverse motor cable.
Remove the three starter/reverse motor mounting bolts.
Remove the starter/reverse motor from the rear crankcase cover as shown and remove the O-ring from the starter motor.

Re: 1800 Goldwing starter
This was helpful but did not answer the mail. How do I get to the third bolt? I started removing the Philip head screws, and the one on the right is exceeding hard to get to as well without stripping, any advice? I am just about there, just need some help to cross this hurdle. Putting it all back together, well that's a "later" challenge.
Thanks,

Re: 1800 Goldwing starter
There's not been a Philips screwhead from the factory on a Japanese motorcycle.
Use the correct tool - JIS (Japanese Industrial Standard) cross-head screwdrivers are still another standard, often inaccurately called Japanese Phillips. Compatible screw heads are usually identifiable by a single depressed dot or an "X" to one side of the cross slot.
There is also a technique for removal *and* proper installation of the starter. Failure to do so correctly will require engine teardown.

I would guess he is talking about the screws that hold the starter together. You don't take those out.
You will need the right tools to get to the starter mounting bolts. And as was mentioned. You can break an internal gear if you try to pull the start in with the bolts. It has to be lined up and fully seated by hand before you install the bolts.
