Rear tire for GL 1800

Post by gordon49 »

Does anyone have any input on running a car tire on the back of a goldwing? Have pros and cons, and will have to replace my back tire pretty soon.

This has been discussed at very great length - have a read through it here: Darkside Tech: Using Car Tires on a Motorcycle Rim

There's a huge thread on another forum regarding going to the "Dark Side". I personally am a "darksider". ... ide-Riders

I have had this car tire on for about 6 months or so, and really love it. The ride is SOOOOOO smooth, the traction is phenomenal, and I have the confidence of a "run flat" tire (The Michelen ALPIN PRIMACY ZP (zero pressure) 195/55-16) and I'm also using 2 oz. of DYNABEADS.

I am on my second car tire got 30,000 mile out of first one. I have no problems at all with them, the ride is little different when turning hard but once you get use to its no problems. I live in Florida it's pretty well flat down here. Have been to Deals Gap no problems at all. More rubber on the road better braking and great in the rain.

Take a good look at the attached picture..
I'm sure the Car Tire will stay seated with normal riding.. I tow a trailer and I don't slow down much for the corners..
I won't do the car tire on my goldwing.. This pic make sense to me because I'm an Auto Tech at a tire center..
Basically the Car Tire bead seat is wider then the Motorcycle Rim bead seat area and the Car Tire doesn't lock all the way in behind the bead lock..
I'm not going to risk it..
