heat control unit

does anyone know where the heated seat control unit is located. on the diagrahm i have looked at it seems to be in the area of the battery.

well looking on another forum, i found that it is beside the battery box behind the left saddle bag, which has to be removed to get to it. this sounds like a good winter project to see if i can get my seat and grips to heat up.

nothing heats up...but after looking at what it might cost to fix factory i think i am going to after market heated seat and grips

no warranty. when i bought the bike it had an unheated after market seat, found out it needed heated seat to make grips work. bought seat off ebay, still nothing worked, did continuity test on seat and passenger backrest seem to be ok, i need to do test on grips but not sure how to. have read some post saying there is away to do that. i have had some mechanics tell me it cant be done, you just have to switch the part out with a known working unit to see if things will start working. sounds expensive to me looking at how much the parts cost. i am getting ready for a trip next week, but i thought i might try some trouble shooting after that, so any help would be appreciated jinx. thanks

We've had a couple people on here who had problems with non-functioning seat heat, and in both cases it was bad connections. Check all of the connectors to make sure they are solid and not corroded.

that is why i was looking for the control unit, because i had read that could be the problem. i wanted to trace all the connections. but i also have read that alot of the time it is a grip, and a new one of those is between 150 and 170 it looks to me. i can get both for less in after market, so that is why i was thinking after market. i would rather have stock, as long as it doesnt bankrupt me. when i get back from Colorado im going to start doing the trouble shooting. thanks for the help

frostypop to check the grips you go under the top shell. I was lucky and was able to get to mine with the right pocket removed. They are in a boot
on top of the back of the air scoop. If you can find the connection for the grips you can short across each grip one at a time . If still nothing try
shorting out both together. The grip control must be turned on for this test.

What I did was buy a current tester Item #67725 from harbor freight for about 10.00 on sale. It replaces the fuse to the circuit you want to test.
The heater circuit pulls about 8 amps when working. It's easier than waiting to see if something heats up.

It's another 2006 owner with the same problem. I posted the initial diagnostic troubleshooting steps there, that should at least get you started.

A 2006 here. Bought it with 7k miles, and no heat. Found just the plug under the seat had been disconnected.

Forward 4 yrs. The one time I use the heaters for the year, they went on, shut the bike off for a minute, then they did not work. An hour later they worked. Went in for warranty in July. Turns out the seat had to be replaced.

well good news all, i got new grips on the bike, and now have my heat working. thanks for everyones help. the left grip was bad. but i learned i a few things along the way. how to remove a saddle bag, how to take the top cowl off, not that i want to do it all the time, trying to find those plugs and undo them in those tight places. and then trying to make sure to get the screws back in the right spot.

frosty you can put the bike on the center stand put the bike in gear and run it. If I doe this and the temp in the garage is below about 52 the grips heat up nicely if set ti high and it only takes about a min. If you have already done something like this to test than ignore this tip.

yep jinx, that is how i tested it. i didnt get to ride it today, we wound up going to the lake with some friends, so maybe tomorrow. thanks for the tip thow, someone may need it.

well its been awhile since i posted here, but here is an update, the wife loves her heated seat!!!
hey there is a guy on the heated/seat grips forum that is having a problem with his heat shutting down after 10 or 15 minutes can anyone help him out
