2010 Goldwing Engine noise

Post by matavawing »

I have a new, 12000 mile, 2010 Gl 1800. The bike is still under manufacturer warranty. I purchased the bike just over two years ago. The service manager admits ti hearing a "Noise" coming from the engine area. But refuses to say it is a defect. This growling/grinding is in all gears.
My question is, Has anyone else had a similar problem with this engine "noise" ?

You bring the machine to the Dealer and have a repair order written for a noise in engine.

They either fix it or will claim "no noise heard" and you leave with R.O. in hand. Then you go over the dealers head to the next person up the chain which would be a District Service rep.

Most vehicle makers today have spelled out clearly what the dispute resolution process is in the owners manual. What does the Honda manual state?

First thing to do is define problem correctly. Ticking, growling and grinding are all different effects and can be caused by different situations. My 2012 makes a washing machine noise at rpms up to 1500. They told me it was normal. 25k for a bike that sounds like an older maytag. I love the bike but hate dealers. They are for the manufacturer, not us!

I have a 2004 GL1800 and have notice an engine noise lately. The noise sounds like a gear growl coming from the front of the bike, but have not been able to pin point it to an area. I have been told that the 2001 to 2005 GL1800's have a Alternator coupler problem that is common and can make an engine noise that has been described to be similar to what I am hearing. Is anyone aware of this issue and how can I pin point or identify the problem. I have been also told that the coupler replacement is a $3,000 fix as the engine has to be removed from the bike to replace the coupling.

It can't be that common. I just searched the net and found 1 poor soul with repeated coupler shaft breakage. These bikes as you know generally go 200K with zero issues. Second opinion time, then a third and so on. I own a transmission shop. You wouldn't believe how many times the diagnosis from outside shops is completely wrong.

We have an 08, our first 1800, and I think that the engine is "louder" then my 1500s were, I hope it is normal, and just the sound of more power, sounds like it is working harder.

I think we have all heard noises coming from our Wings from the day we picked them up. I hear a ticking noice some times when it is cold or even when it is warm which includes the like growling noise in some gears when taking off.

I did what other members posted which is document the noises with the dealer. If anyting should go wrong at least it is on file so I can take it further should something go drastically wrong.

My 2 cents.

My wing is a 2012 and there has been a "whirring" or "whining" sound from day one. I was a little concerned until watching numerous videos on the net of other gl1800's. the noise from mine sounds like all the others I've listened to.

I took my 12 to Nault's in Windham, NH for the washing machine noise coming from my engine. Finally after three other Goldwing techs told me the noise was normal, the service manager came out with it. It turns out that the alternator drive gears were mis-matched. I don't know what that means other than they were coming apart. The noise was getting louder with time. They replaced the gears. The noise is gone. It has to go back for an anti-freeze leak and a rattle. The original noise is gone.

i do know the 1800's,having timing gears and NOT belts are prone to a bit of gear "WHINE" that the 1500's did'nt have.my take is i'd rather have that whine than a belt let go! IMHO

 I know people say we spend too much money on our rides, but I can't hear them when I'm 1000 miles away!
