Squeaking noise from brakes when front brake applied GL1800
Has anyone come across the following issue.
When I apply the front brake on my GL 1800 it works fine but just as I am about to come to a stop the brake starts squeak, I would say the bike is doing no more than 10 mph. It does not seem to do it when using the rear brake.
I am going to the Honda dealership on Friday for service and I am going to discuss this issues with them but I would like other peoples thoughts and fixes as dealerships are trying to make money out of us.
Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Thanks
Chris

Is it a high pitched squeal, or more like a metal on metal screech?

My '06 does it every now and then. No worry on my part. Maybe dirt? Pads are fine on my bike also.

Might try some anti squeal spray on the front rotor and see if that helps.

Anti-Squeal spray for the rotor? I have never heard of that. I know of anti-squeal compound that is put on the back of the brake pads but have never heard of spraying anything on the rotor itself. Doesn't sound like a good idea at all.

Permatex, Loctite and Wurth all make it. It comes in a compound and in a spray. I had a similar problem on my 1100 Virago and it stopped it. But you should clean the rotor with brake cleaner first and then remove the brake pads to apply it properly.

Me thinks you are confused. The sprays and the compounds are made to be used between the pads and the calipers. Not on the rotors.bstig60 wrote:Permatex, Loctite and Wurth all make it. I agree I'm not happy putting anything on the rotors apart from brake cleaner. i have tried that once but did not seem to make any difference but may not have sprayed enough of it. Maybe the best way is to remove the calipers and give a good clean up. Tax runs out at the end of September so it will come off the road for the winter and i can take my time.
I'll up date my findings on here.

Actually there is a compound to be used on the face of the pads. BG stop squeal. If you have an issue with a pad or a set of pads give this a try. On my trike when putting in a new set of rear pads they recommend this on the face of the pads for break in.

Not confused..... Instructions suggest you remove the pads, clean them and then apply the compound. If its going on the pads, its going to get on the rotors.dingdong wrote:Me thinks you are confused. OP, best option is what you said, take the pads off and clean everything up, then use what ever compound you are going to use, if any.

Re: Squeaking noise from brakes when front brake applied GL1
Update
Took its to main dealers. they removed the front pads, cleaned them and took off the edges also replaced rear pads as worn. They took it on test ride and said noise has gone but by the time I had done 5 miles it had returned, they are now thinking about what else it could be.
Regards

Chris hopefully this might help in some way. Also be sure to check the left calipers bracket clearance for the rotor. If the clearance is too tight it will squeal while braking also when rubbing against the rotor.

Re: Squeaking noise from brakes when front brake applied GL1
I get a little bit of squeal when my front brakes are hot. Usually when stopping with my trailer attached. I is not overly offensive but it does bug me a bit. I will fix it sooner or later by changing the pads and cleaning off the rotor.
