Re: Plate under swinging arm GL1800
Without a picture I could only surmise a heat shield/protector plate.

Just guessing here, but does any part of the main stand line up with it? if so it could be a "bash" protector to prevent damage to the drive shaft casting. Just a guess based on a few observations.

Re: Plate under swinging arm GL1800
I note that it has rubber cushions on it suggesting that some small amount of movement is expected when I use. Is it a crating tie point used when transporting the bike from the factory? or something to do with the speed sensor at the back wheel? or is it there to defend the casting from undesirable impact from the muffler fixing bolt? Without a few photos of the area it is difficult to guess and not having crawled about under an 1800 any ideas I may have should be taken with a huge pinch of salt. But someone will know, perhaps a call to your local Honda dealer may reap rewards?

Re: Plate under swinging arm GL1800
My understanding is it has something to do with controlling, eliminating vibration.

Re: Plate under swinging arm GL1800
I have the same thing on my '06 1800 and wondered about what it was and I finally was told that it has to do with harmonic vibration damping for the drive line. At the time I had a leak in my driveshaft and was thinking maybe I was getting a leak through that part. But as it turned out it was the drive shaft seal ahead of the rear wheel. Alot cheaper to replace than the seal at the engine end!! The part you are talking about has no moving parts or anything like that ,it is totally static, by design. Hope that helps.
