display illumination

Post by ibdwingman »

I have 03 1800. No illumination on the handlebar controls or the face of the radio (except for the volume and the mode buttons). I've been told that the older 1800's do not have illumination. True or not? I can't seem to find a service manual on line. I would have thought "docs" would have one. :?:

I have an '03 too, and the handlebar controls are not illuminated. I believe it was the '04 and newer that have the lights.
The radio lighting can be fixed rather easily from what I've been told, and I'll see if I can find the link to that repair. I have one light in the radio not working as well.
-EDIT-
There's a post from a while ago that was asking about the radio lights. It pertains to the GL1500 (?) but the process is supposed to be very similar:

Thx for reply. In researching I found the Rivco has illumination kit for the bars... Very pricey @ $135. A simple fix for the radio would be great.

When I first picked up my 02 I want'd to add the switch illumination myself but found I had the switches memorized pretty quick and spending the $ now would be a neato upgrade only. I have to admit, they do look nice!

To replace the lights in the radio, you will need to remove the radio from the bike.
Here is a link to help you do that: http://www.wingconnect.com/Radio_Removal.html

Once you have the radio out, replace all five of the bulbs. Cyclemax has them on hand. http://cyclemax.com/inc/sdetail/gl1800_ ... /73/105985

The face plate comes off to expose the bulbs. Carefully remove the face plate of the radio, turn it over, and install the bulbs. They are 1/4 turn assemblies.
Be careful with the faceplate because it has electrical connector pins that can be damaged if you are not careful.

Reassemble everything and test it.
