I may have put a hairline crack in my reverse idler gear when I was installing a new starter ( not a fun job). Does anyone know if the idler gear is used only when engaging reverse or does it carry a full stress load with the engine running on an 05 GL 1800? I can live without reverse. To replace the gear.. the engine must be pulled.... not an option right now.
Help... help.... help..
Don't understand how gear was damaged installing starter. On 1500 reverse idler gear is only used when lever is activated, otherwise it rotates out of play. Should be the same for 1800.
That's what I'm thinking as well. Just wanted some other opinions. The starter has gearing that engages that idler gear when inserted. The gear rotates freely but was in the wrong position when I drove the starter into the engine. My mistake was being too aggressive when pushing it in.
