'06 Wing, Replace License Plate bulb with LED
'06 Wing, Replace License Plate bulb with LED
All,
Decided to make some mods to my new to me '06 Wing. First mod...install some rear brake and license plate LED's bulbs. Getting to the license plate blub was easy, removing the old bulb...not so much. Somehow during the license plate bulb removal I managed to push the blub plug inside the truck housing.
In the photo below you can see the gray blub plug is now behind the light housing. I tried using needle nose pliers to no avail. see picture below.
Question...
How do I access the license plate bulb housing to realign the bulbs plug?
thanks

I personally would plug a SMD panel adapter into it and stick a SMD panel in its place, far superior.
If at first you don't succeed, hide the evidence.

Used the SMD a few years ago and it worked great. Just a couple of weeks ago I replaced it with this
T10 COB blub 6W High Power Canbus LED Light
Both work great and will probably last the life of the bike.

Hey guys,
thanks for the replies. In the attached photo...the grayish plug is where you would plug your bulb into. Unfortunately the grayish plug has fallen behind the opening in the black plastic housing. Because of this, the grayish plug now moves around freely behind the black plastic housing and i'm unable plug in my bulb.
I'm trying to figure out how to get behind the black plastic housing and move the grayish plug in front the black plastic opening and plug in my new LED bulb.
in the attached photo...the red arrow points to the gray bulb plug. The plug has fallen into the black plastic license plate housing opening.
any clues?
thanks

Take the trunk trim off. There are screws on the inside of the trunk that holds them on. Next undo the screws that hold the lower outer trunk. That should allow you to remove the lower plastic that houses the light bulb.

Glad you got it fixed. How is that bulb look ?
Re: '06 Wing, Replace License Plate bulb with LED
Hey jinx,
YES....they are very bright!
I'll probably order the front & rear Turn Signal LEDS and LED Flasher module now that i have the service manual. I've seen a few YouTube videos on installing the LED flasher module. But the service manual should really help.
Hmmm...I may add some LED's to my '00 ST1100.

Re: '06 Wing, Replace License Plate bulb with LED
Hi Tyrone,
I have the same problem you had with the lincense plate bulb holder, damaged it with bent nosed pliers trying to re-fit in it's loction position so managed to remove it after removing lower trunk piece and side pieces as per instructions in your post.
I have purchased a new holder & now it's arrived I am unable to fit it as I can't manage to get my hand in or fingers to the housing to enable re-fit, I have also removed the four screws holding the trunk on to get a bit more movement my question is do you have to remove the top trunk completely to gain accessm My bike is a 2003 model
Regards Mick

Re: '06 Wing, Replace License Plate bulb with LED
You'll need to remove both side moldings (side, upper screws inside trunk), and then the rear one (parts #14, 15, and 16). Once those are removed, remove the lower side screws inside of trunk, and the rear ones, to remove the lower trunk cover.
If it helps, here is a parts fishe. https://www.ronayers.com/oemparts/a/hon ... /trunk-box

Re: '06 Wing, Replace License Plate bulb with LED
Thank you for your reply & as I said I removed all those components ie 14/15/16 also managed to remove the bulb holder with brute force as it was now useless & kerput but when it came to refitting the new bulb holder that was a complete new ball game as there is no room for your hand to gain access to refit back into the hole. Due to perseverance and obstinance on my part, I have now managed to refit the new holder due to reverse engineering a piece of cable & a tube of super glue. Has I have said the new bulb holder is now fitted and working but for such a small job it took three days and a lot of bad language to get there.
I also called to three dealerships to inquire with their mechanics for advice but no one had ever come across the problem of having to replace the holder & I hope I never have to replace another.
Regards Mick

Re: '06 Wing, Replace License Plate bulb with LED
Thanks for letting me know how challenging that was. My 2007 is getting a major restoration. Currently the only piece of plastic on the Wing is the trunk box. Prior to installing it, I installed the liscends bulb socket incorrectly. The buld sits sideways and not up/down. Before going further, I need to correc that, but after reading your info, I'll do so by removing the trunk.
