GPS Enter Button not working

Post by rmoss »

I have 2014 wigan have been having issues with the GPS enter Button and it has finally quit working. All it does is ding but does not open up the map. Started off on holidays and all was well. Then after i stopped the bike for a rest and restarted the bike it would not let me start the gps. I disconnected the battery and it worked. I never took the key out and always put it in the acc position. At the end of the day I shut the key off and retried it and it never worked. In the morning it worked fine. Now today it worked first thing but fter a little error on my part with the route I had to restart route and I could hit menu and use the arrows but the enter button would not work. I did have a map. I then shut off bike disconnected battery and retried and this time nothing. The beep is like what you get if you where moving. I and wife on in WV on vacation. Anybody have any ideas. Wife is pretty frustrated with bike for the money we paid. As a note I did a 10 day ride from Ontario to Colorado and the gps worked flawlessly.

Thanks Bob.
by the way this is a great site

So you're saying the enter button doesn't work at any time, for any function? Regardless of whether or not you are moving?

BTW, I've spent time almost every summer since childhood in Southampton/Sauble. I know the area very well!

Yes that is correct. Now today we went for a ride and it started out not working. I was going to a honda dealer to see if they could help me. They where closed. Got back to hotel and decided to go for a ride and it worked fine.

First if it is under warranty take it to a dealer. If you are getting a ding but nothing is happening than the button is working. If the 2014 Nav is similar to the 2006-2008 than the button is connected to the meter panel which send the code for the enter button to the Nav unit in the trunk. So there is probably something wrong either with the meter panel or the nav unit but not the button.

Are you getting the audio display with all the trip and mileage info on the display ?
Have you done any mods to the speed sense line ? It shouldn't make any difference but you never know .

OK I guess I will need to live with it until I get back to Canada.
At least now I have a idea what it might be.
I'm guessing now it is the nav unit itself as it does do some funny stuff. Today I was avoiding a toll road 5km from hotel. When she recalculated I was 2hrs to hotel and she wanted me to back track even though I was almost at the hotel. There was no way points that I missed on the route. Also she used to ask if I wanted to navigate to the beginning of the route but has quit asking that as well.
hopefully it won't take a year to get a new one installed.

Thanks
Bob

OK here is a update. Got back from trip and made a appointment with honda dealer. It was 2 weeks out. After a couple of days at home gps started working fine. Only thing that changed was I was not pulling trailer. I talked to a auto mechanic friend who said it sounded like I had a ground issue with trailer and somehow it was causing me greif. We checked the trailer and I was getting a very low voltage feed back through the wiring. So I am going to rewire trailer with led lights. One of the most common problems is double filiment bulbs like a 1157. Not sure how soon I will change trailer lights but for now gps is working fine. I have tried everything to confuse the gps and it keeps right on working.
as a note I used the kuryakyn plug and play harness and it seems to be working fine.

Are you not using a trailer light isolator (i.e. with relays) in it? If not, you should be, as it will prevent/eliminate exactly this kind of issue, as well as protect your bike's expensive wiring harness from problems that can occur in the trailer wiring.

I used a kuryakyn plug and play trailer wiring/relay gl1800 7676 and a rear accessory light plug and play harness 3230.
are you saying this was incorrect??
It figures I thought I would do it right because on my last bike a venture and I just spliced into each wire separately for trailer lights and had no problems.

Do I still use what I have and also add what you have recommended or remove what I have installed and only use what you recommend.

The 7676 is correct, it is an isolating harness (with relays).

Can you reliably cause/fix the issue by connecting/disconnecting the trailer?

I'm curious where your mechanic saw the "voltage feedback" coming from the trailer. Where did he measure this?

It's a shame, I was just up your way (South Sauble Beach) for a week, a couple of weeks ago, I could have stopped by and had a look at this myself. :)
