Are you saying that you set the pre-load, and the next day you have to set it again?

Check under the bike near the rear shock for an oil leak. Perhaps the system has no oil or is really low. Maybe a broken line?
A quick test:
1) set the bike on the center stand
2) with the engine off, key ON, set the preload all the way to zero
3) listen to the preload motor as you adjust the preload up, and try to hear if there is any difference in the way the motor sounds at any point, like the motor is starting to become loaded down, and take note of the value.
4) If the value is more than 2 (where the motor starts to load down), you need to add oil to the system
There are links somewhere on this and other forums that give step-by-step instructions on how to add oil. Not hard to do, and I did mine in about 45 minutes.
