04 GL 1800 brake light problems

Post by LD1027 »

Hey everyone I'm a new guy. I do most of the work on my bike and recently I replaced the air filter. Wow what a job. After I got it all back together I checked everything and found my brake lights did not work with the hand brake, foot brake is ok. Did I forget to plug something in or maybe break or pinch a wire? Any info. will be appreciated. Thanks LD1027

I doubt you broke any wires, unless you got really rough with the cases. My bet is that you loosened a plug, of it came un hooked. Probably going to have to take some covers off again and just check your plugs, make sure they are tight and secured. I would look mostly at the wires going from the front to back under the seat and false tank cover.
If you are comfortable with a volt meter it would help you by measuring the voltage and then seeing where you lose it going the back.
Good Luck,

I was hoping I didn't need to take covers back off. I will try that and I am pretty good with a Fluke meter. I will share it when I figure it out. Thanks LD1027

I can totally sympathize! When I did my airbox, I had disconnected the radio line and didn't realize until I had it all back together. That's when I thought to test functions. Lesson learned from that!

I don't think there is a connector you would unplug to change the air filter on the 1800 that would effect your front brake switch.
The switch may have already quit working from dirt and road grime in it. Use contact cleaner in it to clean it or replace it with a new one.

You know, newday brings up an great point. I wasn't seeing the proverbial tree for the forest! I bet he has got a right on diagnosis. If nothing else it is easier and quicker than the other. It may have been getting sticky and it finally stuck, hard to say, but easy to check.

Thank you newday!!!!

What ever you find is the problem be sure to post back your findings to help others that read this later looking through a search for their problem fix.
