LED Foglights

Post by waterslider65 »

OK guys, here's one for you to dissect. What is the brightest set of fog lights that will fit a 2008 GL1800 Gold Wing? Keep in mind I want something relatively easy to install.

What exactly are you calling fog lights? Lights that are in addition to the ones already there or upgrading existing ones?

Im not being a smartass but you can get lights to be seen such as Honda's or Showchrome. You can get somewhat brighter like EC's or BIKEMP3's ones with I believe 1, 4, and 6 LEDs. And then theres some you can install you cant turn on except on dark roads at night because of the daylight they create. It all depends on what exactly youre looking for and how much you want to spend. Me,I went with EC's 10 watt LED fog lights and made yellow covers for them. Just as bright as halogen and uses less juice. To me most of the light is to be seen by traffic facing you and the LED gives a brighter forward light. I supplant these with HID headlights for a nice balance. if youre looking for higher end lights go check out ADV rider forums for reviews. If youre looking for the general foglights Google GL1800 foglights and you should come up with most of them.
Heres a link for you that might help.

Fog lights or driving lights. Believe it or not, there is a difference. Everyone who has fog lights standard on their cars use them as driving lights, and put all kinda bright and blue and yellow lights in them. That was not their purpose. The reason they are mounted low on a vehicle is so that they show the road surface when driving in fog. The two lower lights on a GL1800 by their positioning, seem to me to have been designed to be fog lights. Every set of lights I have ever seen mounted in those holes are too bright for fog lighting. Fog lights should have a flat beam that lights side to side. Driving lights have a round, or shaped beam to light farther up the road, and the shoulder, and should not extend beyond the road centerline. I doubt you can find a proper fog light for our bikes, as they are all purposed as driving lights. How often do we ride any distance in fog anyway, unless forced to. I do not have any lights in those holes on my bike. I have chrome domes. I have not found a flat beam light which would serve properly as a fog light.
It ain't about the destination - it's all about the journey

You can replace the existing bulbs with LEDs like these.

Or add something like these Cree LEDs

The fog light I added to my bike were 30W LED @ 1000 lumen, these can not be used for daylight driving lights due to the brightness. They also have what is called "angel eyes", these I use for daylight driving.

There is a video on YouTube on how to install fog lights on a gw . I had piaa put a lp 530 led fog light kit together for lower and a lp 270 led driving light kit for upper . I wanted real fog and driving lights not just bright lights. Installing them next week . I'll give you a review later. Their not cheap you get what you pay for. 2 yr guarantee pricing on their website

These LED lights come with 2 12v leads, one is for the angel eyes and the other is for the driving lights and, of course, a ground lead. I connected the 2 power leads to separate switches, this way I can turn on each light independently of each other.

Thx a lot for answer. One more question. Which switches did you use ? Originally installed on bike's handlebar or some aditional mounted ?

I used SPST switches, like the ones in this link: http://www.skycraftsurplus.com/swrkrinc ... st10a.aspx
Because my 2012 1800 is a level 1 I mounted the switches where the navi controls would normally mount.
