gl1800 will not start

Post by RICHARD CAMPEAU »

My 2001 GL1800 does not have power to anything when key is turned on and engine of course will not start. All fuses are o.k. and battery is fully charged? I am new to this forum so I am asking for helpful comments and suggestions. I am really lost.

Welcome to this site Richard from the land of Lincoln. I am not to familiar with the 1800, but it sounds like the main fuse located around the battery. the main fuse is generally located in its own red case. only a guess but I have had this fuse go out on my 1500. Good luck and again welcome. :D :D

If the main fuse is good it might be a bad relay. There is a group of relays located under the passenger seat. Trade one not being used for the ignition one. This might solve your problem, it did for me when this happened. Good luck and welcome to this group.

Seems as though I have read posts where the battery appears to be charged but is still bad and has shorted out.

Remove one of the leads to the battery and connect an auxiliary power source to the leads. You will eliminate a possible bad battery if the bike operates normally. These bikes have ground issues under the gas tank that require tank removal to access. I would run an auxiliary ground to the bundle for extra precaution. Ground issues are when, and not if. We need more info for further diagnostics.

I would also check the main fuse. Sometimes corrosion builds up and it doesnt look like much but it can cause issues,or possibly its blown.

THIS REPLY TO" GOLDWING WILL NOT START" IS FROM THE OWNER AND REPAIRMAN .I APPRECIATE EVERYONE ANSWERING BUT YOU WERE ALL ( MAY I SAY THIS IN A FRIENDLY WAY-----WRONG). THE PROBLEM WAS A BAD CONNECTION IN THE HARNESS CONNECTOR UNDER THE TOP SHELL LOCATED NEAR THE LOCK FOR THE TOP RIGHT FAIRING STORAGE DOOR. ACTUALLY IT IS A 6 PIN CONNECTOR RIGHT BEHIND THIS LOCK. THE LARGE RED HOT WIRE COMING FROM THE IGNITION GOES INTO THIS CONNECTOR. IT DID NOT LOOK CORRODED MUCH BUT I FOUND THE PROBLEM WHEN I WIGGLED THE CONNECTOR WHILE THE KEY WAS ON AND SUDDENLY EVERYTHING CAME TO LIFE ...LIGHTS HORN, RADIO, ENGINE STARTED ETC.I MUST ADMIT THAT I THOUGHT OF ALL THE THINGS YOU MEMBERS DID AND THANKS FOR ANSWERING. HAPPY SAFE RIDING TO ALL. RICK CAMPEAU... WINDSOR ONT.

The GL1800 is a crotch rocket on Steroids.
