Front wheel finish failure.

Post by bohdan »

I know similar topics have been posted before, but has anybody have any luck of having failed wheels from clear coating fail? This picture is the front tire of a 2013 Goldwing. Having bought a trike and a bike at the same time, the stock wheels all show the same imperfections. I have been told the clear coat on the second generation wings can fail right at the sharp edges as shown on the pix. Thinking this could be a warranty issue, a letter was written to Mother Honda with a unfavorable response from a service representative telephonically. Basically, tough cookies. A request to put their response in writing is against their policy. Really?

This failure is quite common on 1800,s here in the UK. If it happens during the 2year warranty period Honda will replace them free of charge BUT they still fit the same wheel type with the same finish so the exact same fault will occur.

On all my Wings I have had my wheels powder coated from new. I have a spare set of wheels so I just get them powder coated so that they are ready to fit when my new bike arrives.
In my 2016 bike I e had them done in Satin Black. The powder coat finish is easier to clean than the standard clear coat and it appears to be harder wearing too.
