2008 GL1800 ABS light flashing

Post by Geeoff »

HI
Can anyone tell me what four (4) flashes on the ABS fault light means.
Followed the info to retrieve the code but don't know what it means or where to start looking to repair fault
Any help would be most appreciated.
Thanks

Code 4 is a fault in the front control motor system. It could be:

- Bad front modulator control motor fuse
- Bad front motor
- Bad or malfunctioning front crank angle sensor
- Bad wire harness or connector
- Bad ABS control module

First thing you want to check is the fuse:

Fuse 5
Fuse 5

Have you first cleared the codes and seen if it comes back? It might be intermittent.

Thanks
Got to checking it out last night, It may have been dirt in one or more of the connectors. I had read in another forum that if you switch all the wiring on the modulators and come up with a code "5" then that would make sure it was the front modulator to fault But I could not stretch the harness from the rear modulator to fit the front one. So I blasted the connectors with contact cleaner and reinstalled them and all was fine. DIRT don't you just love it!

Thanks again WingAdmin.

Hi ,
It eventually came back , so I invested in a new (to me) ABS modulator and installed that and all went fine and still works as far as i know. I upgraded to a 2020 DCT Tour .
The modulator I bought on Kijiji came as a pair ( I noticed that both right and left modulators are the same) so I have a spare if anyone out there requires one I have one for FREE.
I believe the problem with my old modulator was the switch on the unit.

I am. Mine has been flashing the past couple of years. Where is the pair of 'modulators' and the switch on the bike?

The modulators are found behind the black plastic cover just above the round / oval silver cover behind the front wheel.
Care must be taken if removing modulator as brake lines are quite rigid and have to be eased out of position to remove modulator.
Its workable though.

You say you believe the problem was the switch on the unit? Switch on what unit?

On the top of each modulator there are two wiring connections, One for the motor ( two wires) and the other which I believe receives or delivers information from / to the ABS system ( three wires ).
The one with three wires was the problem item. (the one on the right hand side of the modulator in the picture which is connected with two Allen screws)

Did you test the switch on your bad one or just a guess?

I took an ohm meter and tested across the switch and whilst having removed the switch from the modulator i was able to rotate the switch with a small screwdriver and noted that there was no difference in the meter reading. Before moving the switch I noted the position of the switch so that it could be placed back in the original position.

The switch has a ohm reading of about 480 ohms from centre pin to one of the outer pins when in full deflection only. if the switch is moved to the other full deflection you will find the same resistance at the other outer pin and the centre pin. Mine was missing one of the connections causing the ABS fault.
